Biography
Born the illegitimate son of Isabella Cock, he was baptized in Tilmanstone, Kent, England on 15 Mar 1840.[1] In the 1841 census, he is in the household of his grandparents, Simon and Mary Cock.[2] His mother married Abraham Amos in 1847,[3] and in the 1851 census William appears as William Amos.[4] However, in the 1861 census he has returned to his birth name of William Cock.[5]
