Biography

Simon Cock was baptized 20 June 1756 at St. Augustine in Northbourne, Kent. His parents' names were Simon and Jane.[1]

Simon Cock was buried 9 Apr 1842 in Ringwould, Kent, England.[2]

Marriage

Simon Cock married Dorothy Parker on 14 Oct 1778 in Great Mongeham, Kent, England. At the time of his marriage, the groom was "of the Parish of Ripple."[3]

The banns had been announced in Great Mongeham on 26 Sept,[4][5] 3 Oct,[4] and 10 Oct 1778.[4]

The indexed record at FamilySearch gives the year of their marriage as 1779,[6] but the original parish record clearly gives the year 1778.[3]

Also at FamilySearch are two other indexed entries, which may refer to banns. One, in Great Mongeham, is dated 14 Apr 1779.[7] The other, in Westbere, is dated 26 Sept 1779.[8] No original record that corresponds to 14 Apr 1779 date has been found in Great Mongeham. The original parish records of Westbere have yet to be consulted.

Family

The known children of Simon Cock and his wife Dorothy were:

Mary, baptized 29 Apr 1781 in Ringwould, Kent[9]
Elizabeth, baptized 30 Mar 1783 in Ringwould, Kent[10]
Simon, baptized 30 May 1784 in Ringwould, Kent[11]
John, baptized 30 Oct 1785 in Ringwould, Kent[12]

Two additional children were baptized in Knowlton, Kent:

Edward, in 1788
Dorothy, in 1791

Beginning in 1796, a Simon Cock or Simon Cook of Knowlton appears in the Kentish Gazette as a gamekeeper for Sir Narborough D'Aeth, baronet, of Knowlton Court.[13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20] In 1804, he is listed as the gamekeeper not at Knowlton Court but at Sir D'Aeth's other manor, Northcourt, in Tilmanstone.[20] It is also noted in 1800 and 1801 that Simon is a yeoman.[17][18]

In the 1841 census, a Simon Cock appears in the parish of Tilmanstone, aged 85. His occupation is given as "Ind," an abbreviation for "Independent." Also in the household is an Edward, presumed to be the Edward who had been baptized in Knowlton in 1788; three younger Cock males, possibly Edward's sons; and three individuals of differing surnames.[21]
