Alfred Robert Cockram was born on April 25, 1862[1] at West Anstey, Devon, England. His baptism is recorded in the parish register of West Anstey; it took place on May 25, 1862.[2] His parents were John Cockram and Ann Catford By the time he was 18 Alfred was working as a sadler and still living with his mother, his uncle and two of his brothers in the farmhouse at Higher Woodland, West Anstey.[3]On October 15, 1881 Alfred aged 19 emigrated to Australia. with his brother William who was 26. They sailed on SS Cotopaxi from Plymouth and arrived at the port of Adelaide in South Australia.[4][5]
In August 1885 Alfred was convicted at suit of Edmund Fischer and Charles J. Gander for £73 9/9 besides costs, on a warrant dated 19 August 1885 attested by Wm. Benny the sheriff who arrested him. He was held in prison for 8 days August 20-28 when he was discharged by the Insolvency Court.[6] The image headed 'Register of Persons brought to the common gaol at Adelaide in the Province of South Australia' is very faded. This document adds that his occupation was a saddler and that he was single.
Less than two months later on October 9, 1885, Alfred died in Magill, Adelaide, South Australia at the age of 23. He was buried in West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide.[7]
