D-Day Normandy
On this day 75 years ago, June 5, 1944, my 18 year old dad, along with over 125,000 other young men and boys were leaving the safe shores of England for a terrifying unknown.
Edward J. Cody and Crew of the LST-500. Here is a picture of my dad with a few of his Shipmates from the LST-500 (my father is in white T shirt). They would land their flat bottomed boat on the beach to unload men and equipment and sit there as targets while loading wounded and waiting up to 12 hours for the tide to come back in so they could leave. Then do it all over again. And again, and again.
Captain's Log, LST-500. I also attach a copy of the Captains Log for this day, June 5, 1944. It shows them leaving their anchorage at Salcombe Harbour to join a convoy heading across the channel to Normandy.
The log is simple and factual. Imagine what was going on in their hearts and minds. The few that are still alive from that day typically still have nightmares.
May God Bless and comfort them all.[1]
