Marion was a farmer in Georgia

Marion was born in 1818 in Georgia to Michael Cody and Rebecca Rogers. He had at least 5 half-siblings: James, Mary, Peter, Elizabeth, Green Womack; and 4 siblings: Louisa Amanda, Temperance Sophronia, Jeptha Melton, and Madison Derrell. His father was a first generation American; his grandfather Cody was an immigrant from Ireland to America.

3 Aug 1831 He is named in the will of his father as son, Michael M. Cody (Proved 7 May 1832; Recorded 25 May 1832).

About 1838, he was residing at his father's homestead (his father having passed in 1831/2), probably with his mother and some of his siblings.

He married on 3 Dec 1839 in Warren County, Georgia, to Rachael English, daughter of Aaron English and Lucy Johnson (granddaughter of Matthew English and Jennie Farmer Brewer). He was 21 years old. They had at least 9 children together:

  1. Rebecca Sophrania Cody

  3. Lucy Ellen Cody
  4. Mary Louisa Cody
  5. Jeptha Melton Cody
  6. Anna J. Cody
  7. Aaron Taylor Cody
  8. Sarah Theodosia Cody
  9. Fannie Derelle Cody

Within a year after he married, he purchased a small tract of land adjoining his father's homestead from a widow of Henry Adams and moved there. Most of his children were born in this home. He eventually built a large square and substantial dwelling on the spot of the Adams home to accomodate his large and growing family.
