WALTER ERNEST COE, D.M.D., L.D.S. [obit Dentist Magazine]
WITH the passing of Walter Ernest Coe on March 17, King’s College Hospital Dental School lost the last of the team of staff appointed at its foundation in 1923. Born in 1891 in Streatham, W. E. Coe studied dentistry at King’s College and Guy’s Hospital Dental School, whence he qualified in 1914. He served in the army as a dental surgeon and encountered there V. H. Kazanjian who was instrumental in encouraging him after the war to spend a year studying at Harvard where he obtained the D.M.D.
On returning to London, he set up a practice in Brook Street and later joined the staff of King’s College Hospital as assistant to C. E. Wallis. It was quite natural, therefore, that he should be invited to join the staff of the new dental school when it was founded in 1923. He was appointed lecturer in ceramics, a position he held until his retirement from King’s in 1947. With the introduction of the National Health Service, he was tempted to seek a complete change of occupation and joined the Dental Estimates Board as a dental adviser; he was appointed one of the first dental advisers to deal solely with estimates for courses of orthodontic treatment.
His knowledge of all aspects of dentistry was of great help to the Board in its early years. At this time, he was a frequent visitor to colleagues in dental schools, maintaining a constant link between the Board and current teaching in orthodontics. He retired from the Dental Estimates Board in January 1966. He will be remembered by countless King’s students for his meticulous ceramic work and for his gentle kindness and tolerance. His wide knowledge of many subjects, especially the arts, made him a most interesting companion and colleague. All who knew him and worked with him would wish to extend their sympathy to his son and daughter. B. C. L.
