Benjamin was born in 1816 "near" Tarentum, Allegheny County, PA. (Some records show East Deer, PA.) He passed away in Arkansas about 1897 while living with his son Edward, but was brought back to Louisa County, Iowa to be buried. In his life, Benjamin had been a hatter in Pittsburgh, PA, a singer and a singing teacher, an Elder in the Presbyterian Church, a farmer in Elm Grove Township in Louisa County, Iowa - where he also served as a Postmaster for a while, and Treasurer for Louisa County.
