I am a retired educator. My interest in genealogy goes back about four decades now. I have been especially interested in attempting to trace my mother's surname: Patterson. I found my undergraduate degree in history to be quite helpful when I researched and wrote two books about the family of Robert (James Robert) Patterson, my gg grandfather: On My Ancestors' Shoulders From Virginia to Iowa: The James Robert Patterson Family, Eagle Book Bindery Publishing Co., Cedar Rapids, IA, 2017; and, Carry Me Forth From Old 'Virginny': Tripping With The James R, Patterson Family Across Two Centuries (1813-2018), Eagle Book Bindery Publishing Co., Cedar Rapids, IA, 2018. In my research I was unable to find and substantiate who his parents were, but I have succeeded in proving who James Robert Patterson's parents were NOT. Accordingly, my research results will necessitate that a number of people eliminate some names from their genealogies, some of whom were accepted by the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Sons of the American Revolution. I have located and documented places where Robert Patterson lived, but not who his ancestors were. I am continuing the quest to identify who they were.
