Biography

Vernard was born on 30 June 1890 in York Township, Union County, Ohio.[1] In the 1900 census Vernard (age 9), At School, was the son of Columbus D Coe in York, Union, Ohio.[2]

Ceremony Performed by lr. Welch, of Ohio Wesleyan. Richwood, O., June 16.
Special. Miss Ruth Hewitt and Mr. Vernard Coe were united in marriage today, at the conclusion of the commence exercises of Ohio Wesleyan university, the ceremony having taken place in Grey chapel, at Delaware. The double ring ceremony was used, Br. Herbert Welch, president of the college, officiating. The groom was a member of this year's graduating class at the university. The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Hewitt, and she has been been a fourth-grade teacher in the local schools during the past few years. She was graduated from the local high school with the class of 1909, and graduated from Wittenberg college, at Springfield, in 1913. The groom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Coe, of near Richwood. He was graduated from Richwood high school with the class of 1911 and this year finished a four-years course at Delaware. Following the ceremony. which was witnessed by the bride's parents, the wedding party had luncheon at a Delaware hotel, after which the bride and groom left for Athens, Ohio, where they will reside. Mr. Coe will be engaged in the insurance business at Athens.[3]

Vernard completed his World War I draft registration in 1917 in Delaware County, Ohio, United States.[1]

Vernard died (age 78) on 23 February 1969 in Ashland, Ashland, Ohio, United States.[4]

Vernard D. Coe, 79, Ashland, Rt. 4, died in Ashland samaritan Hospital Sunday, following a heart attack.
Born in York township, near Richwood to J. D. and Elizabeth Penhorwood Coe, June 30, 1890, he was a graduate of Richwood High School and Ohio Wesleyan University. He was a teacher and principal in the Senior High School at Mansfield for 30 years, a member of the First U. M. Church and Mansfield Lodge No. 35 F & A. M.
Mr Coe was married to Ruth Hewitt of Richwood, now deceased. The following children survive, Robert H. of Redondo Beach, Calif. and Roger of Seattle, Wash; one daughter, Mrs Eleanor Gilbert, Huston, Texas; three step-children; nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.
In 1944 he married Grace Cheney of N. Lewisburg, who also survives.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday with burial in Mansfield Memorial Park.

School Teacher For 30 Years Vernard Coe, 70, Stricken
Vernard D. Coe, 70, Ashland, R. D. 4, died in Ashland Samaritan Hospital Sunday afternoon following a brief illness. Mr. Coe retired in 1949 as a history teacher at Mansfield Senior High School where he had taught for 30 years. Born in Richwood, O. June 30, 1890, Mr. Coe operated a farm since his retirement. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Mansfield Lodge No. 35 F and AM.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Grace C. Coe; two sons, Robert H. of Redendo Beach, Calif., and Rodger of Seattle, Wash.; one daughter, Mrs. Eleanor Gilbert, Houston, Texas; two stepsons, Waldron Rhoads and Melville Rhoads of Columbus; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Robert H. Coe, Redendo Beach, Calif., and nine grandchildren and one greatgrandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted in the J. H. Finefrock and Sons Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon at 1 by Mr. Coe's nephew, Rev. Leland Wiley of Tiffin and Rev. E. J. Mansfield, pastor of the First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Mansfield Memorial Park. Friends may call in the funeral home after 2 Tuesday afternoon.
