Biography

The following per Bartlett's Coe genealogy:

ROSWELL COE (Robert, Jonathan, Ens Robert, Capt. John, Robert, Robert), born in Winchester Conn., Feb 5, 1780, when a young man located in Genesee Co., N.Y. whence he removed in 1812 to French creek, Chautauqua Co., N.Y., where he bought lot No. 39 on which he permanently settled and improved a farm. In 821 he was one of the founders of the Baptist church at French Creek where he died July 26, 1825.

He married in 1804, POLLY PORTER, born March (or May) 24, 1784, died at French Creek, N.Y., Sept. 8, 1854.

i. Ferdinand, b Jan. 14, 1805.
ii. Paulina, b. June 30, 1806, m. Olin Colburn.
iii. Pholonzo, b. Nov. 18, 1807.
iv. Polly, b. May 14, 1800, m. Stephen Tyler.
v. Susan, b. Feb. 14, 1811.
vi. Birdsell, b. Aug. 23, 1814, was a farmer and occupied his father's homestead at French Creek, N.Y. d. at Sherman, N.Y. , Jan. 10, 1808.

He m. at Mina, N.Y., Feb. 16, 1841, Sarah J. Skellie, b. at Cambridge, N.Y., May 14, 1820, daughter of Alexander and Hannah (Clary) Skellie; she d. at Sherman, N.Y., June 21, 1895.
Children b. at French Creek, N.Y.:
1. Robert, b. Mar 17, 1844, was a Union soldier in the Civil War and was killed at the battle of Cold Harbor, June 1, 1864. He was unm.
2. Emma, b. July 28, 1840, m. at French Creek, N.Y., Jan. 14, 1868, James Rhodes, b. in Cranberry Twp., Venango Co., Pa., June 24, 1841, son of John and Charlotte (Barr) Rhodes. He is a farmer and they live at French Creek, N.Y. Children: Frank, Dana, Lottie.

vii. Sophia, b. Aug. 18,1817, m. John Skellie and resided at Mina, N.Y. Both are deceased. Children: John, Imogene, Melissa.
viii. Willis, b. May 17, 1819.
ix. Robert, b. Jan 22, 1821, was a miner, sailor and farmer, and d. at Ripley on Lake Erie, N.Y. in Mar. 1906. He m. Feb 18, 1850, Julia Ann Kellogg, b. May 19, 1831, daughter of Harvey and Pamelia (Golding) Kellogg of French Creek, N. Y. No children.
x. Ansel b. Mar 15, 1823, d. at French Creek, N. Y., Jan. 11, 1844, unm.
