Gonçalo Coelho was born in Portugal.

Summary: Gonçalo Coelho was sent on several expeditions in the early sixteenth century including one in 1502 where they found Guanabara Bay naming it 'Rio de Janeiro.' In 1503 he sailed to the Cape Verde Islands and then from there struck a reef which destroyed the ship. All of the men were saved and sailed onward to Brazil.

Gonçalo Coelho[1] was born in 1451. He passed away in 1512.
