Biography
Jan Coene was born around 1610-1620, probably around Moerkerke, in West Flanders (he is not found on the index of baptisms of Moerkerke, which starts in 1603). It is speculated that he was born in Sijsele to Pieter Coene (died 1646 in Moerkerke) and Arnoudijne van de Walle[1].
Other version: born 3 January 1620 in Moerkerke, godfather: Leonard Coons.
He married Laurentia Devos around 1642 (the marriage record has not been found; it was not in Moerkerke). They had the following children:

- Gilis Coene
- Gilis Coene
- Gilis Coene
- Lieven Coene
- Joris Coene
- Bernard Coene
- Arnold Coene
Laurentia died in 1677; and on 24 August 1677, Joannes Coene married Joanna De Witte (witnesses: Judocus Boterman and Laurentius Coene). It is not clear whether the husband of Joanna De Witte was Jan Coene born 1620, or his son, born 1647.
Jan Coene died on 16 April 1684 in Moerkerke, and was buried on 18 April.
