Biography

Johannes was born on 20 April 1683 (according to his Bible record) [1] and baptized under the auspices of the Reformed Church of Flatbush, New York, on 22 April 1683, recorded as a child of Court Stephensz and Marritje Van Kouwenhoven "op Amersfoort".[2] He died 10 October 1757. His will was proved 5 February 1758.[3] He married first, Barbara Van Dyck, daughter of Achaias Van Dyck and Jannetje Lamberts[1] and married second, Sarah Vliet.[3]

In his Dutch Bible, he entered his own birth and marriage thusly: "Ick, Johannes Koerten, ben Geboren den 20 April in het haer 1683. Ick, Barbara Van Dick, ben Geboren den 20 December in het yaer 1683. Wy Zien Getraut in het yaer 1703, den 19 November." [1]

As indicated in that Dutch record, Johannes married Barbara van Dick (or van Dyck) on 19 November 1703. She died on 18 April 1743. In the Bible, he wrote: "Barbara, myn huys vrow, is overladen Den 18 April, in het yaer 1743, Out Synde 59 yaer, 4 maanten." [1]

His second wife was Sara Vleit. As recorded in his Bible, she was born 7 November 1694 and they were married 2 May 1744.[3]

After his first marriage, Johannes settled in East Jersey. [3] Johannes Courten purchased property from Aria Borum ux. at Freehold, Monmouth County, East Jersey on 11 December 1705. [4]

The name of Johannes Court appears in the first list of members of the Reformed Dutch Church of Freehold and Middletown dated 1709.[5] Today it is known as Old Brick Reformed Church, located in present-day Marlboro, Monmouth County, New Jersey. Barbara, wife of Johannes Court, was listed as a member in 1717.[6] Their son, Zecharias, was baptized there on 1 April 1711. On 10 February 1712, Johannes and his wife Barbara were witnesses at the baptism of Mattenke, daughter of Adrian Bennet and his wife Barbara.

He later settled in the Rombout Precinct, now Fishkill, Duchess County, New York. [3]

Johannes Coert himself outlived his son, dying Oct. 10, 1757. He was one of the organizers of the Fishkill Dutch Church in the year 1734 and served either as deacon or elder until his death. [1]

In his Bible, Johannes recorded the births of his children: [3]
