James Stephen, born about 1806 in London, Middlesex, England, [1][2] was the eldest son of James Coffin and Maria Chappell. On February 5, 1830, he married Harriett (Harriette) Totty in Newington, Surrey.[3] Their son, James Stephen Chappell, was christened on January 12, 1831, at Holy Trinity in Newington.[4] Their second child, Thomas Stocks, was born September 30, 1832, and christened September 30, 1832.[5] Harriett died in 1845 [6] and James remarried in 1849.
James and Frances Ginman were married March 10, 1849, in Stepney.[7] They had five children: John Ford (1849)[8], Edward George (1851)[9], Maria (1852)[10], Charles Henish (Hewish) (1854)[11], and Frances Charlotte (1855)[12] In 1851 James worked as a clerk for the Mendicity Society, a charitable organization in London.[13][14]
