Biography

Bessie (Coffin) Toombs descends from Tristram Coffin Sr, a Nantucket founder.

Bessie Isabelle Coffin is the daughter of Edwin Sterns Coffin (1834-1923) and Jessie Caroline (Stewart) Coffin (1838-1915) ^[1].

There is some controversy as to Bessie's birth date. Her headstone says 1867 - 1938 but based on 1881 census, she is 2 years older than her brother Charles and 2 years younger than her brother Victor. With Victor born in 1864 and Charles born in 1868, Bessie's birth year should be 1866. The 1901 census says 25 Aug 1867, but her death certificate from Manitoba says 23 Aug 1869. With birth year matching the census in 1901 and 1911, as well as the estimate in the 1921 census and the estimate from published obituary, a preponderance of data suggests 1867 is the correct year. So, Bessie was born on 25 Aug 1867 in Mount Stewart, PEI, Canada ^[2].

Bessie married John Geddie Toombs about 1888. A marriage record has yet to be found, but their first child's early death suggest that with a birthday of April 1889, the the couple were married within a year or two of 1888 ^[3]. Bessie and John went on to have a total of six children ^[4][5].
