Biography

Hannah Coggeshall was born in Rhode Island, presumably by 1688 (based on an assumed minimum age of 18 at the time of her first marriage in 1706); it is likely that she was born in or near Portsmouth, where her parents are believed to have married. She first married Stephen Hawkins, son of William Hawkins and Lydia Gardiner; widowed by his death in 1711, two years later she married Jonathan Sprague, son of Jonathan Sprague and Mehitable Holbrook.

Research Notes

Her death record has not been found. It at first seemed possible that she was the Hannah Sprague who m. a John Paddock (possibly John Paddock, 1682-1762) at Bristol, RI, on 2 August 1738; however, the death date for Jonathan Sprague, Jr., in 1664 indicates that Hannah was not free to remarry.
