Alice was born in London in 1866. She was the daughter of Albert Cohen and his wife Elizabeth.[1]
She married a recently qualified lawyer, Rufus Daniel Isaacs in 1887, and they had a son 2 years later Gerald Isaacs.
Her husband was knighted in 1910 and became Solicitor General, then Attorney General, Chief Justice, Viceroy and Governor General of India. Her titles followed her husband's and she became Lady Isaacs in 1910, and then Baroness Reading in 1914, Viscountess Reading in 1916, the Countess of Reading in 1917, and the 1st Marchioness of Reading in 1926, after their return from India.
Alice was in poor health but insisted her husband accept the role of Viceroy and accompanied him to India where she involved herself in charitable work and the role of Viceregal consort. She campaigned for a new hospital to be built in Peshaware and it was named the Lady Reading Hospital. In 1920, she made a GBE (Dame Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire) in the civilian war honours. In 1921 she was awarded the CI (Companion of the Order of the Crown of India) and in 1924, she was awarded the Kaiser - i - Hind medal for public service in India.
Alice died of cancer in January 1930.
