Jacob was born on November 5, 1796 in Georgetown, Georgetown County, South Carolina. He was the son of Solomon and Bell (Moses) Cohen.
Jacob married 1st Rachel Moses Lopez on February 14, 1816 in Georgetown. They had seven (7) children including Solomon, Jacob. Jr., David Lopez, Priscilla Lopez, Sarah Henrietta, Abraham, and Septima. Rachel passed away on June 3, 1832.
Jacob married 2nd Sarah Barrett on October 22, 1834 in Charleston, South Carolina. Jacob and Sarah had eight (8) children including: Judah Barrett, Joseph, Rachel, Rosa Ellen, Isaac Barrett, Cecelia, Isabel "Belle," and Octavus.
In the 1820 Fed. Census (Georgetown, South Carolina), Jacob's household included the following members: 3 males under 10; 2 males 16-25; 1 female 10-15; 1 female 16-25; Reported 12 "Slaves:" 2 males (under age 14); 1 male (age 14-25); 2 males (ages 26-44); 1 male (over age 45); 3 females (under age 14); and 3 females (ages 14-25).
Per the 1830 Fed. Census for Georgetown, South Carolina, Jacob's household included the following members: 1 male under 5; 1 male 5-9; 2 males 10-14; 1 male 20-29; 1 male 30-39; 1 female 5-9; 1 female 30-39; Reported 294 "Slaves": 39 males (under age 10); 16 males (ages 10-23); 32 males (ages 24-35); 42 males (ages 36-54); 5 males (ages 55-99); 51 females (under age 10); 20 females (ages 10-23); 36 females (ages 24-35); 38 females (ages 36-54); 15 females (ages 55-99).
In 1850, Jacob's household in Charleston, South Carolina per the Fed. Census of that year, included 9 members as follows: self (age 58); Sarah (age 41); Solomon (age 33); Judah B. (age 15); Joseph (age 13); Isaac (age 9); Cecelia (age 7); Bell (age 5); and Octavus (age 6 mos.). Jacob is described as a "Broker" in this 1850 Fed. Census record.
In 1860, Jacob's household members: Jacob (age 65); Sarah (age 50); Gracius B. (age 19); "Miss D." (age 15). Both Jacob and Gracius are described as "Brokers." "Miss D." had "attended school within the year."
In 1870 (per the Fed. Census of that year), Jacob's household included the following members: Jacob (age 73); Sarah (age 60); Belle (age 28); Joe (age 35); Sarah (age 28); Octoavus (age 9); "B." (age 7); Joe (age 5); Abe (age 3); and "C" (age 1); Members Jacob thru "C." are identified with surname "Cohen;" B. Anderson (age 87, servant); E. Heyward (age 41, servant); B. Sawyer (age 48, carpenter); Ade Ford (age 24, dom. servant); and Grant Grant (age 48, dom. servant). In this Census, both Jacob and Joe Cohen are described as "Cot. and Rice Factors."
Jacob passed away at age 74 on June 13, 1871 in Charleston. He is buried at the Coming Street Cemetery in Charleston.
