According to "The Genealogical Exchange"[1], an old Newport record states that James was born on December 25, 1725 and died on January 6, 1814. He married (1) Dec. 10, 1747 Mary Yates, or Yeats, of Bristol[2] (supposedly one record says "Sarah Yates"). She died in 1762, and the James married (2) Aug. 28, 1763 Phebe Wilcox[3].

Research
Both of James's children with photographed headstones on FindAGrave had the spelling "Cahoone". For the broader family, descended from a Cahoone in the 17th century, this spelling and "Cahoon" appear most frequently. The name is Scottish, and "Cohoon" and "Calhoun" are other alternative spellings.
James appears as head of household in the 1774 census of Rhode Island[4]. The distribution of the household and inferred attributions are
two men over 16: James and unknown (both older sons appear separately in the census)
two boys under 16: sons Stephen and William
two women over 16: Phebe and probably an older daughter, the youngest possibility being Abigail
five girls under 16: daughters Martha, Elizabeth, Phebe, Rebecca, and Penelope
