Biography

Jemima Coldwell was born on 29 June 1740 at Stoughton, Norfolk, Massachusetts, the daughter of William and Jane Coldwell.[1]

She was in the middle of 10 children. In 1744 the family moved to Connecticut and later she arrived in King's County, Nova Scotia, in 1758 with her parents and siblings as part of the Planter Migration. The New England Planters, called such because they were planting a colony, were brought by the British government to take up the lands that the British had exiled the Acadians from. Many fields, barns, houses, and dykes were already established and now left unoccupied; the Planters moved into these.

Eaton writes that when Jemima married Arthur Scovel, they were the first couple to be married in Horton Township, but did not claim their prize, and it went to the second couple. Jemima and Arthur had 5 sons and 2 daughters together. She is the mother of all the Schofields/Scholfields/Scofields/Scovilles/Scovils/Scovels in King's County and likely Nova Scotia.

Jemima probably lived into the 1800s and almost certainly died in Kings County.

Online trees show Jemima's death in Connecticut and also in Kings County, Nova Scotia, Canada. I have been unable to find source for either.Watt-266 22:23, 16 January 2017 (EST)
