William Cole was a Hollander (Dutchman).
Came to Auburn township, Crawford county, from Washington County, Pa., during the early part of the last century.
William Cole was a farmer, and the first Justice of the Peace in Auburn township.
On one occasion, having no paper in the house, he used a pumpkin for a court docket.
William Cole was a great wolf trapper. He caught large numbers of them and sold the pelts. He was also a good fighter, and was never whipped.
He was a Methodist, and they held their meetings in the barn. He believed that to whip was according to Scriptures.
He was the first settler in Richland County and cleared a farm of 160 acres. He built a little cabin when bears, wolves, deer an Indians were plentiful.
At the age of seventy, his arm was so mangled that it had to be amputated.
He was a Democrat until the war, and then became a Republican. He was a member of the United Brethren church, and was opposed to secret societies.
He had a kind word and a warm sympathy for every one he met and commanded the respect of all who knew him.
He was the father of sixteen children, the sixth of whom was Mrs. Ramsey. He never whipped any of them with anything except a stocking.[1]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:
