Married Mary Jane Merrell 23 December 1869 at the Endowment House in Salt Lake City. Joseph Smith and Daniel Well attended the ceremony. They had 12 children, 6 boys and 6 girls.

- My Grandfather, Col Hubert M. Cole, wrote that he visited his grandfather, this William E. Cole, only once when he (my grandfather) was 16 years old, and that William "died a year or two after that meeting". Col Hubert M. Cole was born in 1905, which would have put William Cole's death around 1923.
