Henrietta was born on 2 July 1754 in St. Mary's County, Maryland to Robert Cole and [[Greenwell-424|Anne Greenwell]. [1][2]
She married Basil Hayden Sr in Maryland in 1771. She was a pioneer to Kentucky along with her husband, Basil. In her lifetime, she buried 11 of her 15 children, four of them on the way to Kentucky.
After the death of her husband, Basil, in 1804, Henrietta married for a second time. She wed Charles Ewing on 19 February 1805.[3][4][5]It is speculated that Charles was the father of Henrietta's son, William Leo, as he is not the son of Basil Hayden.[6] She later divorced him, claiming he was already married to someone else. A short article written about her can be found here.
From The Remarkable Henrietta Cole[7]
Henrietta Cole faced hardships and obstacles in her life with determination, courage, and faith. She was born in St. Mary's County, Maryland on July 2, 1754, to Robert Cole, Jr. and Anne Greenwell, well established Catholics in the religious community known as "the cradle of Catholicity." In 1771 at the age of seventeen, she married Basil Hayden, who was ten years older than she. The Hayden family was a prominent family in St. Mary's County and Basil was well-known and respected in the community. In 1784, he was chosen leader of twenty-five families emigrating from St. Mary's County, Maryland to Pottenger's Creek Settlement in Nelson County, Kentucky. In early 1785, the group started their journey by land and on flatboats down the Ohio River.
By 1785, Basil and Henrietta had nine children making the trip with them. Four of them died on the arduous and difficult journey: John Baptist, age six; Joseph, age four; Teresa, age three; and John, age one. Three other children on the journey died at early ages: Eleanor, age twenty-one; Ann, age twenty-eight, and Robert, age thirty-three. Out of six more children born in Kentucky, two died very young: Hillery, age several months old and Alexander, who died between one and twelve years of age.
Henrietta outlived Basil by thirty-three years. It is remarkable that she died on 6 December 1837 in Washington County, Kentucky at the age of eighty-three.[8][9] Even more remarkable is that she outlived ten of her fifteen children. Henrietta's faith was most assuredly tested in her eighty-three years with work, suffering, sickness, and death, but she overcame each obstacle knowing that others depended on her courage and bravery.
