Biography

Birth

DROWNED NEAR HULL BRIDGE. The body of Alfred Cole, waterman, Burnham-on-Crouch, aged 44, was found on Friday morning floating near Hull Bridge. Mr. C. Edgar Lewis, coroner, held an inquiry at the Anchor Inn, Hull Bridge, on the deceased. Inspector Smith, of Rochford, represented the police. William Cole, of Burnham - on - Crouch, said: The deceased was my brother, 44 years of age, and waterman. I had not seen him for two months. He belonged to Burnham. He had never to my knowledge threatened to take his life. He has a brother in Brentwood Asylum. He had lately been going from place to place and leaving his work. had wife and four children. Arthur John Cheel. of Hull Bridge, deposed: I saw deceased about 10 a.m. yesterday ou the other side of the river from here. He was wandering about. He lodged at my house two nights—Sunday and Monday. Yesterday, about quarter to three o'clock, I was on the brickfield close by when I say/ the body ou the mud, and with the assistance of P.c. Poulton removed to this house. Deceased appeared wandering his mind bit. William Himpett, of Hockley, deposed: I found the clothing produced on the north side of the river here yesterday, and handed them over to P.c. Poultou. They wero about yards nearer Burnham. Percy Ponlton, P.c. 305, of Hockley, deposed : received information yesterday of the finding of deceased's body and assisted in its removal this house. I found 7id. in bronz9 in the jacket. No letters of any kind. The jury returned verdict Suicide during temporary insanity.".

He died in 1907 at Hullbridge, Essex. Cause: drowned. Note: Essex Newsman - Saturday 01 June 1907.
