William was born in 1860 at Wellow, Nottinghamshire, England, UK. He had an older sister, Jane, whose married name was Withworth [1]. He was baptised at St Swith's Church, Wellow, Nottinghamshire [2][3] The baptism records his father as William Cole (a labourer), mother as Julia Cole.
In 1861 William (born Wellow) was 9 months old, living with his parents William (48, born Rampton, an Agricultural Labourer) and Ann J (48, born Wellow) and his siblings George (23, a journeman carpenter born Wellow, Elizabeth and Sarah Ann (both 13, born Ollerton) [4].
In 1871 William (10), his parents William (59, an Agricultural Laborour born Rampton) and Ann J (56, born Wellow) and brother George (33, a Joiner) were still living in Wellow [5].
In 1880 William was registered to vote in Wellow [6].
He was married to Catherine Cole (born Ollerton Notts c. 1866), and was the father of Wilfred, Ernest and Christine Cole. At Wilfred's baptism in 1899, his residence is the Rufford Liberty, and trade is Grocer [7].
On 3 April 1881 William (age 20), Kennel Groom (Huntsman), was the boarder of Robert Dalton in Kennels, Belchford, Lincolnshire, England.[8].
On 5 April 1891 William (age 37) was back with his family in Wellow, Nottinghamshire, England.
In 1911 William was a 51 year old domestic groom/gardener born Wellow, married to his wife 15 years, 46, born Ollerton, had given birth to three children, all of whom lived), their children Wilfred (12 born Rufford) and Ernest (8 born Worksop), Christine (4, born Worksop) and his sister, the widow Jane (Cole) Whitworth (1845-) (65, born Ollerton) at Clumber Gardens, Worksop, Nottinghamshire [12]
In 1921 William (age 61), Horseman to the Duke of Newcastle, was the married head of household in Clumber Gardens, Worksop, Nottinghamshire.
