Biography

Silas Cole was born in Hampshire, England.

Silas Cole was a convict after the Third Fleet transported to Van Diemen's Land

Silas was baptised on 31 DEC 1820. at Chilbolton, Hampshire, England. Parents John and Tryphena COLE.^{[2] [3]}

At the time of the 1841 census, Silas can be in the county gaol at Winchester, aged 20.^[4]

An English convict transported to Van Diemen's Land. He was tried at the assizes at Southampton, Hampshire, England on 24 FEB 1842 and was sentenced to transportation for ten years.^[5]

He travelled to Melbourne, Victoria, Australia from Launceston, on the North Briton, Moffat or Clarence 24 MAR 1853, after becoming 'Free by Servitude'.^[6]

Silas married Jane Martin in 1855, Fingal, Tasmania. The couple had at least 10 children.^[7]

He died at age 78. on 3 JUN 1899 at Queensborough, Sandy Bay, Hobart, Tasmania.^[8][9]

Silas was a lime burner who collected the shells from the Aboriginal middens and burnt them for lime. He loved the area and often described its beauty to his friends when he took his lime across Great Oyster Bay to Swansea. Coles Bay in Tasmania is named after him.^[10]

What is my connection to the convict Silas COLE? I have triangulated matches and an AncestryDNA Cluster with a number of descendants of Silas (via several of his children).
