Biography

Alexander was born in Virginia in 1805. He is the husband of Susan Ratcliffe Cole (1806–1886) whom he married in about 1825 (marriage record needed). About 1846 this Cole family moved to Laurel, MD to work at the cotton mill. The family remained in this area until ca 1862 when they moved to Washington, D.C. Alexander, now a farmer, became a huster bringing food into DC. The Washington Post on August 25, 1880 reported that Alexander Cole's horse which was attached to a country wagon became frightened and the horse run up 7th Street and collided with a wheat drill in front of Mann's Hardware Store. Alexander received a deep cut on his head and arm which resulted in blood poisoning. He died a week later on September 4. His tombstone states the year as 1879. The tombstone appears to have been erected at a later date when two of Alexander's grandchildren died. The reverse side of the stone is inscribed with information of these two children. He passed away in the District of Columbia in September of 1880.[1]
