Sergeant Phineas Cole served with Essex County, Massachusetts Militia during the American Revolution.

Biography

Phineas Cole, son of Samuel Cole and Bethiah (Hardy) Cole, was born on 20 November 1744 at Boxford, Essex County, Massachusetts.[1]

He married Abiah Haseltine on 19 January 1766 at Bradford, Essex, Massachusetts.[2]

Children, born in Bradford:[2]

  1. Susannah, b. 26 October 1766.
  2. Sarah, b. 31 January 1768; m. Eliphalet Buck.
  3. Deborah, b. 29 May 1769.
  4. Abigail, b. 10 May 1771.
  5. Bethiah, b. 27 April 1773.
  6. Phinehas, b. 3 May 1775.

Abiah (Haseltine) Cole died 31 August 1775 in Bradford.[2]

Phineas married, second, Catharine (Badger) Hudson, widow of Frost Hudson, on 17 May 1776 at Bradford.[2]

They had one daughter, born in Bradford:

  1. Catharine, bapt. 23 May 1779;[2] m. Benjamin Whitcher.

Phineas married, third, widow Rhoda Buswell on 21 January 1813 at Pelham, New Hampshire.[3] She is likely Rhoda Cross, b. 27 April 1755, Methuen, daughter of Samuel Cross and Martha Hibbard, and widow of Nicholas Buswell (m. 28 April 1774, Bradford) who served with Phineas Cole in Capt. Nathaniel Gage's Company, Col. James Frye's Regiment.[4]

Phineas Cole died on 18 Dec. 1822 and was probably buried in or near Pelham, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, but the location is not known. His memorial has detailed biographical material.[5]

Nathaniel Wade's (Essex Co.) regt.; engaged June 29, 1780; discharged Oct. 10, 1780; service, 3 mos. 24 days, travel included; company raised to reinforce Continental Army for 3 months; roll dated Haverhill.[6]
