James was born in 1809. He passed away in 1863. HIs birthplace is shown in the different census records as South Carolina. This also according to "Southern Cole Families" by Mattie Cole Stanfield.

Notes

According to Find A Grave memorial, the birthplace is Tennessee. However, this is incorrect. Based on early Census records and several Cole family researchers, James was born in South Carolina.
