The son of Jonas William Cole and his first wife, Almira S (Greene) Cole, Edmund Cole was born in Clarkston Township, Michigan[citation needed] in 1842, residing with with his family in 1850 in Independence Township, Michigan.[2] His siblings included:
Edmund Cole enlisted during the American Civil War, enlisting as a Private in Company F of the Michigan 23rd Volunteer Infantry on August 15, 1862 and mustering out in March of 1865,, having served for nearly three years.[3]
Edmund's father died whilst fighting in the Civil War, passing away six weeks after Edmund mustered out of his company. Edmund returned to Michigan, marrying Maria S (Chapel) Rhyndress, the daughter of Daniel S. Chapel and Theresa Lucretia Trombley, in Bay City, Michigan on April 27, 1868[4] having three known children together:
They made their home in Bay City, Michigan where in 1870, Edmund worked at a sawmill.[5] The marriage ended in divorce, with Edmund's wife remarrying in 1874. Edmund remarried in 1879, marrying Ann Elizabeth (Demuth) Rice, marrying in Greenbush, Michigan on June 26, 1879.[6] The marriage did not last, quickly ending in divorce.
In 1880, Edmund and his two children lived in Bath Township, Michigan, where he worked as a carpenter.[7] In 1890, residing in Newark Township, Michigan, Edmund reported on the 1890 Veterans Schedule of the census that he suffered from cataracts and deafness.[3]
Edmund remarried in 1891, marrying Lucinda (Powell) Hardy, the daughter of Silas Powell and Asenath Osborne and the widow of Thomas Hardey, marrying in Ithaca Township, Michigan on January 20, 1891[8] and making their home in Newark Township, Michigan.[9] The marriage ended in divorce and in 1900, Edmund lived in Newark Township with his daughter, Mary Drake, and her family.[10]
Edmund Cole ended his own life by hanging, passing away in Newark Township, Michigan at the age of 58.[11] He is buried at Ithaca Cemetery in Ithaca Township, Michigan.[12]
