John was born on 8 September 1605 in Moulton, Northampton, England. He was the son of Thomas Cole.

Note: On 3 April 1655 John bought the property in Hartford which Abigail (Cole) Sullivant had inherited from her father James Cole, who had died in 1652. He bought it, however, from Elizabeth Sillivant, who, as Elizabeth Lamberton, had married Daniel Sillivant after his first wife Abigail (Cole) Sillivant had died. Abigail was the only surviving child of the marriage of James and Ann Cole and who came to New England with them about 1639.
