Biography

James Cole, son of John Cole and Isabell Montgomery, was born on 18 May 1812 in Russell Co. Virginia. He was less than eighteen months old when his father marched, with other volunteers from Russell County to serve in the War of 1812. James' father died at Norfolk, Virginia on 17 Mar. 1814, when James was not quite two years old. About 1817, his mother moved to what is now Morgan Co. Kentucky with her children, accompanying her father and others of the Montgomery family.

On 23 May 1833, James Cole married his second cousin, Edith Jane Montgomery, who was the daughter of John Montgomery and Sarah Flannery of Floyd Co., Kentucky. She was born 22 Jun. 1815 in Floyd Co. Kentucky. Their daughter, Elizabeth, later told that the parents of James and Edith didn't approved the marriage, because they were cousins. So, the young couple moved to Arkansas and they never returned to Kentucky. However, Isabell Nickell signed the consent for her son to marry. Her signature,"Isabell", was witnessed by Isaac Nickell, John Montgomery and Sanders Montgomery. The marriage bond was signed by John Montgomery (Edith's father) and James Cole.

Two children were born to James and Edith (Montgomery) Cole before they left Kentucky. Their first child was Miles Cole, born in 1835. A daughter, Minerva Jane Cole was born in March 1837.

They moved to Madison Co, Arkansas probably in the fall or winter of 1837. They were listed on the 1838 Tax List of Madison Co. Arkansas. They were accompanied by the family of Joseph J. Montgomery, uncle of James Cole. It has been told that they settled first at the town of Delaney, Arkansas. Later they moved to Combs, Arkansas, where James owned a tavern or inn. Traveling stock men would spend the night there and keep their stock in a large stock pen. James Cole was also a blacksmith.

The 1840 Census of Madison County, Arkansas shows James Cole and his wife as age 20-30. They had 1 male 5-10 and 2 females under 5 in their household. They were listed between John R. Williams and Joseph Montgomery.

In 1850, James Cole and family were listed in Hilburn Township, household #220. James was 38, and his wife, Eda, was 33. Their children were Miles 15, and Minerva 13, born in Kentucky; Elizabeth 10, Sarah 8, Violet 3, and Harrison 11 months, all born in Arkansas. On one side of the Coles were Joseph J. Montgomery and several Williams families, including John R. Williams. On the other side were William Rowe, Thomas Shasted, and Prators, Patricks, John Fraley, and Montgomerys. Most of these people had come from Floyd and Morgan Counties, Kentucky.

James Cole died on 24 Sep. 1859, according to his tombstone. His daughter told that he died of cancer of the hip. The late Alvin Seamster, of Garfield, Arkansas, told that James was gored by a bull in his stock pen, and that he died from injuries. (Alvin Seamster's mother was a Cole, and he thought they were related.) The 1860 Census Mortality Schedule states: "James Cole, 47, white male born VA.' died Sept.'Blacksmith; Cancer; ill 90 days." James is buried in the Patrick Cemetery near the town of Patrick in Madison County, Arkansas.

The "bushwhackers" came upon them near Mulberry, before they reached Ozark, and killed all of them. One account was that his uniform was stolen from his body. Another person remembered hearing that they pulled his shirt over his head and his pants over his feet and left his naked body lying in the hot July sun.
