Birth

William Cole was born the second son of William Cole and Anne Colles. He was born c. 1583. The birth year is estimated on the notice by the family historian[2] where his older brother, Michael, stated to be 20 years 9 months on 16 February 1602[3] and thus born c. May 1581. It is likely that William was born shortly after and estimated at 1583.

In the genealogical history of the Peerage of Ireland, by Lodge, Vol 6, page 42,[4] he is said to have married Elizabeth Deards, daughter of merchant (a silkman), Nathanael Deards of London. They had children:

  • Arthur Cole. Who died without children.[5]
  • William Cole. Who died without children.[6]
  • Michael Cole. Who died without children.[7]
  • Humphrey Cole. His detail is not provided by the family historian although it might be presumed he had no children as his younger brother becomes heir.
  • Nathaniel Cole. Appears on page 32 of the work by the family historian.[8] He settled in Wigtown, Lincolnshire, prior to 1665.
  • Thomas Cole. Studied Theology at Westminster and later Christ Church, Oxford. Died September 1697. No notice of any children.
  • Robert Cole. Becomes Sir Robert Cole of Ballymackey, Tipperary, Ireland. Knighted 25 March 1671. MP for Enniskillen in 1661 and attainted in 1688/89.
Born: About 1583.
His older brother was aged 20 years 9 months in the IPM of his father taken on 16 February 1602 (so born about May 1581); this puts William's birth date as about 1583 and perhaps a few years younger. [9]

ELIZABETH DEARDS Married WILLIAM COLE (64-1) married William Cole on 2 June 1618. She was born in London on 28 September 1600.

The son Robert born to William and Elizabeth Deards does not seem to be the Sir Robert Cole of Ballymacky, according to the Peerage of Ireland, cited.

:The Genealogy of the Cole Family states that Robert Cole of Ballymackey was the son of William Cole and Elizabeth Deards.<ref>Edwin-Cole, James. Genealogy of the Cole Family. (1867): page 27.</ref> The wording makes it clear that it was following Lodge's Peerage of Ireland based on the identical wording of the description of Robert Cole; however, the Peerage of Ireland does not say this.
The Peerage of Ireland says "it is thought" that Robert Cole of Ballymackey was the son of Sir William Cole (d. 1653), only son of Emanuel Cole and Margaret Ingram, third son of Thomas Cole of London and Elizabeth Hargrave.<ref>Lodge, John, and Mervyn Archdall ed. The Peerage of Ireland, volume 6. (1789):

page 46 fn.</ref>

This book can be difficult to follow and it is likely that the Genealogy of the Cole Family simply misread the Peerage of Ireland. Without other evidence, Robert Cole of Ballymackey should be the son of Sir William Cole (d. 1653) as given by Lodge.

That is what I had in mind. The parentage here has been totally warped to represent the line in the "Genealogy".

It would be nice to have actual evidence of Sir Robert's actual parentage, which seems to appear nowhere, but it is at least reasonable.

So. New evidence turns it all around, Sir Robert seems indeed to be the son of this William Cole.

The parish register for the marriage of William Cole and Elizabeth Deards, daughter of Nathaniel Deards, gives the date as 1618. It is thus clear that William's death date, for which no source is given, cannot be 1611. This date has been deleted in order to allow the connection of these spouses.

If, on the other hand, these dates for William are correct, it is clear that he can not be married to Elizabeth Deards-20, so the profiles should be detached and another wife found for William.

Cole-4641 and Cole-963 appear to represent the same person because: both seem to have same wife. Dates in biography of Cole-4641 differ with the dates in profile. Both profiles seem to be messed up.

Cole-963 and Cole-3358 are not ready to be merged because: These are obviously the same person ; the dates needs adjustiment and sources as his wife's dates matches ( and slight misspelling of her maiden name ). Looking for sources to complete the merge in this family.

Cole-5229 and Cole-3358 appear to represent the same person because: same father, same name....not much else to go on

Detaching parents William Cole-625 and Ann Colles-21 because they were born about the same time William Cole was born, they could not have been the parents unless one or other of the birth dates are wrong.
