Marshal was born about 1854 in Virginia, USA.^[1] Marshall was the son of Rev. William Jefferson Colebank and Anna Amelia (Hayes) Colebank.

Marshal married Ida Lapp on 2 December 1879 in Shelby, Missouri.^[2] The couple went on to have at least seven children.
