Life Sketch

Samuel Coleman

The ninth child of George and Elizabeth (Bailey) Coleman, Samuel was their eighth and youngest son. He was born on his brother Louis' 7th birthday and the 4th of July 1854. The place was the family home at Hemelhempstead Hertsfordshire, England. Before he was two weeks old his 4 year old brother Joseph had broken a tooth on a hard piece of horehound candy and died from the ensuing infection.

The name "Samuel" was probably chosen as this childs name in memory of his two great uncles who had died in infancy. One of his grandfathers George Coleman (abt.1765-1811) brothers named Samuel was born at Arlesey, Bedfordshire, England on the 5th of April 2900 and died that summer. Triplets were born to this family on the 23rd of August 1801, one of whom was also named Samuel - he lived only four days, however.

When Samuel was ten years old he accompanied his parents and three sisters aboard the Sailing Vessel "Hudson" and came to America and the land of Zion. He helped his parents work their farm at Holladay near the mouth of Big Cottonwood in the Wasatch Mountains, seven or eight miles southeast of the Great Salt Lake City.

In 1880 the United States census enumerator for Utah recorded that Samuel was living at the home of this father in "Cottonwood Precinct," and following the occupation of farmhand. The Salt Lake City directory of 1891-92 lists Samuel Coleman's residence as Big Cottonwood no occupation is given.

The last half of Samuel's life was spent in Midway, Utah, where he lived near his sister Annie's (McMillan) home. He was also only a short distance from the homes and families established by his brothers Henry, William and Louis in that same community. Samuel never married, he lived by himself in a small cabin. He raised a nice garden and sold a few vegetables until his later years. He was always ready and willing to do various errands and chores for neighbors and relatives.

He was in regular attendance at most Sacrament meetings. I recall seeing him at Grandpa Louis' Funeral Service in 1935; he was about 80 years old at the time. He died in Midway on 2 Nov 1938 and was buried beside his parents in the Holladay, Utah Cemetery near 22nd East and 50th South in Salt Lake County.
