Dear MaryLu:
I read an old posting (1/27/05) by you regarding the bios you wrote, one on Jarvis Howard. My GGG Grandfather was Jesse Fisher Howard. William Henry Howard was my GG Grandfather.
I would love to know where to secure a copy of your 'Jarvis Howard' bio.
My Great Grandfather, Frederick E. Howard, was the son of William H. Howard who was one of the sons of Jesse Fisher Howard who was the son of Asa Howard and Mary "Polly" Fisher.
According to the family oral history:
Seven Howard brothers came over from England. As time passed and each became involved in his own problems, they drifted apart and lost contact with one another.
Asa Howard, born in 1776, married a Mary 'Polly' Fisher in 1805. They had 6 children: Jesse Fisher, Daniel, Mary,Willard, Samuel and Charles.
Jesse Fisher Married Martha Robeshaw and they had 10 children: Mary G, Samuel B, Charles W, Emmeline, Jarvis, Augusta, William Henry,Esther Ann, George, Gross
JARVIS was married to Lavina Coleman (Sister of William Henry Howard's wife, Mary Coleman). Jarvis was assumed to have been a fur trader because he spent so much time among the Sioux Indians. He had a daughter, Lottie, whose mother was a Sioux Indian. GG Aunt Lavina, having no children, took Lottie and reared her as her own daughter. Lottie married John Vadene, a jeweler in Wadena MN.
HENRY (William H) married Mary Jane Coleman, daughter of CB Coleman of Wadena Minnesota. They had six children: Bell, Cora (Mitt), Frederick Eugene, Della, Lunetta, Samuel (born a few months before Mary Jane Coleman Howard passed. Shortly after Mary Jane died, Henry remarried to a Christina. Because the new wife did not want to have anything to do with the youngest children, Emmeline Rackliffe (Jesse Fisher Howard's daughter) took Lunetta (Nett) and Della while Lavina and Jarvis took baby Sam. When my G Grandfather was 12, he was so mistreated that his Grandpa Coleman took him and sent him to live with Emmeline and John Rackliffe. Henry and his new wife had at three children, the only ones that the narrator of our family history could remember were 'Uncle Art' and 'Aunt Helen'. Art worked as an agent for the Railway in Dallas, Oregon. At that time my Great Grandfather was conductor on the Independence, Monmouth RR which went into Dallas. I located a 3rd, Lor Howard.
Henry Howard, in his later years, made his home with his daughter Helen in Seattle, Wa.
ESTHER ANN married Mel Coleman, Mary Jane & Lavina's brother CB Coleman and Jesse Coleman had homesteads next to one another in Albion MN.
EMMELINE married John Rackliffe, they had a homestead in Wright County, Albion MN. They had at least 2 children and Emmeline took in several nieces and nephews over the years as well as Jesse lived his final years on the Rackcliffe farm.
SAMUEL B married Christina Lansear. They had 10 children: Alice, Jarvis, William, Rolie, Arthur, Dora, the other 4 died in infancy. Samuel became a very influential resident of albion /township. He devoted his life to lumbering. From his earliest childhood he was interested in the lumber business. As early as 12 he worked in a shingle mill and from then until 1856 he was in the lumber business in Maine continuously, in mills, in the woods and on the rivers. He was in Forest Michigan from 1856 to 1865 following the lumber business. In 1865 he returned to Albion and purchased 57 acres from his father, Jesse.
Samuel was a true pioneer and was 'intimately acquainted with many of the prominent characters of the early days', including Hole-in-the-day, a famous Chippewas chief.
No mention was made of Jesse & Martha's other children.
I have hit the wall with Asa. He is very illusive. Other than a record of his marriage to Mary Polly Fisher and the birth of their children, I can find no further mention of either Asa or Polly. I would love to secure the info on his parents and siblings. I would love to identify the original 7 brothers.
I don't know whether any of this info will be new to your friend or not...hopefully at least some of the personal recollections will be of interest.
Again, if you can let me know how I can purchase a copy of your "Jarvis Howard' bio....I would greatly appreciate it.
Warm regards,
Sharron Howard Bryan
