Biography

John was born in Ireland on November 17, 1844. His family emigrated to Canada sometime between 1848 and 1850 [this is known because his sister Jane was born in Ireland in 1848 and his sister Julia was born in Arkell, Ontario in 1850]. In 1851 John is living with his family in Waterloo County, Canada [1]The 1861 Census of Canada has 18 year old John Coleman working as a printer in Kincardine, Ontario[2]

In 1864 John enlisted in the 182nd Ohio Regiment and was assigned to K Company [3] [4]. [5]It is unknown if John emigrated to Ohio prior to enlisting, or if he travelled to Ohio for the sole purpose of enlisting, but the latter seems more likely. John and his regiment would have participated in the Battle of Nashville on December 15, 1864.

After the Civil War the entire Coleman family appears to have emigrated from Ontario, Canada to Sarpy, Nebraska. The 1870 Census shows John R Coleman living on a farm owned by the Overton family in Sarpy Nebraska [6]. This is probably our John as the same Census shows his father, mother and some siblings also living in Sarpy [7].

It was in Nebraska that John met Lucetta Johnson and they were married on October 31, 1870 in Omaha, Nebraska [8]

In around 1875 John, Lucetta and their two children moved a short way across the border to Jewel, Kansas. Here they added seven more children to their family, including the twins Minnie and Vinnie. John was a member of the Superior, Nebraska branch 63 of the Grand Army of the Republic [9]

In about 1890 John and Lucetta moved to Superior Nebraska, where their last child was born. Then in 1900 they made a major move, this time to the Ponoka District of what in 1903 would become the Province of Alberta [10]. Here in 1901 they were joined by their daughter May (Coleman-12293), her husband Thomas Harris (Harris-39420) and their family. They remained in Alberta until at least 1911 [11] . But shortly thereafter they moved to Fowler, Montana. Here John died on November 18, 1915 at the age of 71.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
