Research Notes

RESEARCH NOTES - Lea Walker Sullivan Sept 23, 2023. There has been a difference of opinion amongst researchers about the parentage of Hezekiah Coleman. I feel the following excertps from March 1. 2023 From [3] Page 6 "Children of Robert Coleman and His Wife, Ann Hinton: Abner Coleman Abner Coleman, Sr. was born circa 1755, could help clear up some doubt.

"Abner Coleman Sr. gave 90 acres of land to his son Hezekiah on the north side of Mill Creek on September 13, 1811. The deed transaction mentions their son, Abner, Jr.

Hezekiah sold his land to Philip Coleman, son of William, on December 26, 1811. His cousin, Richard, witnessed the transaction. Hezekiah’s wife, Elizabeth Belue, relinquished her right of dower. They moved their family to Gwinnett County, Georgia".

There has been much confusion on this family line. Several of the children of McDonald Coleman (1836-1878) filed applications with the Guion Miller Rolls, Eastern Cherokees Application (specifically, application #44808 which was attached to Sidney Bird Coleman application, which combined all the applications together.) It was Rejected:

Ancestors were not parties to treaties of 1833-6 - 46; [said] grand parents (Hezekiah and wife Elizabeth) born prior to 1835; near two hundred miles from Cherokee territory; no affiliation or association with Cherokee tribe.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Hezekiah by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Hezekiah:

There is no Hezekiah Coleman on any Emigration Roll before Removal in 1838-39. He is not listed in Don Shadburn’s book which does not include any Emigration Rolls, or in Jack Baker’s transcripts of te emigration rolls.

Some 90,000 people were named on Eastern Cherokee (Guion Miller) applications; only 30,000 of them were actually eligible Cherokee. The settlement was for $4 million dollars in 1906, an unimaginable sum back then; people looked at it like the lottery and figured they had nothing to lose and everything to gain by applying. Advertisements had been placed in newspapers all over the country. Unscrupulous attorneys charged people to fill out the forms, write letters, and obtain fraudulent affidavits. Guion Miller went to extraordinary lengths to determine who was Cherokee and who wasn't. If you look at the cover page on the applications you'll see Miller's conclusions spelled out. For example, Sidney Bird Coleman's says "Ancestors were not parties to treaties of 1835-36-46, grandparents born prior to 1835 near 200 miles from Cherokee country - show no affiliation or association with Cherokee tribe. This Hezekiah is not the man who had a Cherokee wife. That Hezekiah was married in the Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory, after Removal. There is no mention of "Hezekiah Coleman" in any of Don Shadburn's books. There is an "H Coleman" on the muster roll of the B.F. Curry detachment of Cherokee who went west in 1831-32, but that appears to be "Henry" Coleman, not Hezekiah.
