Research Notes

As I "dig into" the records for this family, I am aware of two Robert Colemans in the same area at the same time, both with daughters named Susannah Coleman. One Is definitely Robert Spilsby Coleman of Essex Co, VA, who on 31 Dec 1753, just prior to her marriage, gifted negroes to his daughter Susanna who was to be married to Capt John Richards. That is a DIFFERENT Robert Coleman than we are concerned with here.

The ancestor Robert Coleman that we are concerned with here, (the one married to Sarah Ann Saunders/Sanders) so far, has no written record of a middle name of Spilsbe (all spellings). His daughter as spelled out in his will was Susanna Coleman who married a Mr Yancey. "OUR" Susannah is NOT the one born 1735 Abingdon Parish VA and NOT the one died 15 April 1778 Stafford Co, VA. I think what has happened is early on, researchers confused the two and now we must sort out what belongs to whom.

Unfortunately, some researchers of the Capt John Richards and Susannah Coleman line are using some of the dates and information that belong to THIS Robert Coleman and Sarah Ann Saunders. Any and all help to make corrections is appreciated!

Records

Robert Coleman is named in his father Thomas' Will dated 10 February 1748/9 in King and Queen County, Virginia.[1]

I have transcriptions of deeds that involve a Robert Coleman, most likely the fellow of this profile. I sources are inline so can supply those separately if you are interested. The profile for whom these deeds were transcribed in most likely the brother-in-law of Sarah Sanders.

June 7, 1743 – John Wynill Sanders and George Chapman witnessed a petition whereby Robert Coleman was granted 400 acres of land in Spotsylvania County for non-payment of a bond by Nathaniel Sanders of Northampton County, North Carolina. Nathaniel Sanders had made a bond to Robert Coleman on January 26, 1742, for payment of taxes on the property left to him by his father, Nathaniel Sanders, deceased, and had failed to fulfill the bond

March 30, 1748 – John Wynell Saunders of Orange County was warranted 400 acres in Culpeper County adjacent to the land of Robert Coleman and William Coune. This parcel was not surveyed

January 3, 1749 – John Wynill Sanders of Culpeper County sells to Robert Coleman two Negroes, Mingo and Phillis, and her future increase. Sanders also mortgaged to Coleman a Negro boy named Harry should he not have good title to Mingo and Phillis. Witnesses to this transaction are J. Clayton, Wm. Brown, and Bergeson. The deed was recorded July 20, 1750

December 11, 1749 – John Wynel Saunders of Culpeper County, received a land grant of 335 acres in Culpeper County that was surveyed by George Hume. The property was in the Great Fork area of the Rappahannock River, adjacent to Butler’s Swamp adjoining the lands of Joseph Thomas, Robert Coleman, William Cowne, William Tutt, and Captain Robert Green. [This grant and the one mentioned in the March 1748 entry, are most likely for the same parcel of land. The first entry was for land that had yet to be surveyed and thereby accounts for the difference in acreage.

June 20, 1751 – John Wynill Sanders and Francis, his wife, of Culpeper County sell to Evan Thomas of Richmond County for £25 a tract of land containing 335 acres. This property…on a small ridge on the south side of Butler’s Swamp corner to Joseph Thomas, Gentleman, and Robert Coleman…corner to William Cowne near a path…corner to Cowne on a ridge…to a line of William Tutt…on a hillside near a road of Captain Robert Green, deceased…side of a small branch corner to Robert Coleman as by deed from the Proprietors Office December 11, 1749, granted to John Wynill Sanders. This deed was signed by John Wynell Sanders and Francis Sanders, she using her mark. The transaction was witnessed by P. Clayton, Robert Coleman, Richard Thomas, and William Williams. The deed was recorded September 20, 1751

Mildred Coleman who married Col John Slaughter also went by "Milly". The MIlly that is listed here as a child of Robert Coleman and Sarah Saunders, I believe is incorrect. She has Law children and I believe belongs with a different family group.

I think the middle name Spilsby should be removed from the profile's name and a notation made in the Research Notes. If some documentation comes to light that Spilsby actually was his middle name, it can be returned to his name at a later date.

There is an earlier profile for this Robert Coleman. However, the author misidentified him as Robert Spilsby Coleman. But, he has good documentation for Robert Coleman, son of Thomas Coleman and Mary Lort. The only other info that sets him apart is the year of birth. There is a Robert Spilsbe Coleman (Coleman-4071) but his parents are Spilsbe Coleman and Mary Crow.

While you have many of the facts correct about Robert Coleman, son of Thomas Coleman (Coleman-347) and Mary Lort (Lort-19) you have included a middle name that is not correct. Robert Spilsbe Coleman (Coleman-4071), was the son of Spilsbe Coleman and Mary Crow.

The Robert Coleman you have identified here has been duplicated by a later entry (Coleman-4986). I am going to initiate a merge.

Lucy Coleman Strother, wife of French Strother, is documented as a daughter of Robert Coleman and Sarah Saunders. Can we get these profiles connected?
