In 1877, he took over the license for a pub at 56 Chapel Street, Pentonville.(1)
In 1880, he was described as a fly driver when he had to appear in court after apparently threatening the life of his father-in-law. He was also accused at the same proceedings of having struck his mother-in-law because she would not let him see his wife, whom he had threatened to drag from her sickbed. He claimed in his defense that his father-in-law was delusional. He was fined.(2)
In 1898, he was working as a tailor. That year, he was fined for public drunkenness.(3)
His wife appears to have died before the 1911 Census, at which time he was an "Unemployed Clerk".
1921 Census finds him in Barking, Romford with Emma, Edward James and 3 others.
In 1926, he was sent to the workhouse twice for drunkenness. He was charged again in 1928, by which time he seems to have been working as a street musician, singing outside pubs for tips. This time he was dismissed with a warning.(4)
