Biography

Mary Jane Coleman was born on January 14th 1876, in Sioux City, Iowa, and baptized on February 10. Godparents were William Mellon and Mary Jane Keeal. [1] She was the second child and first daughter of Thomas Coleman and Anastasia Hickey. [2] [3] Everybody called her Mame. [4]

She married James Amherst Rae , October 17th 1900. [5] James led a successful career with the telephone company. [6]

Mame was busy in Sioux City as member of the Tourist Club, where she and other ladies presented papers on various subjects, such as "The Salmon Industry of the Pacific". [7]

Mame's sisters-in-law, Elizabeth (Rae) Ellis and Mary (Rae) Yerrington, were also busy club members. Mame and Mary travelled to Grand Junction, Colorado in 1913 to see Elizabeth. The ladies played High Five and enjoyed a 5 o'clock luncheon with the Au Fait Club. [8]

Around 1925 Mame and her husband, who had no children, took into their home one of Mame's nephews, Leland Pierson . [9] [10] Over the years family ties between the Rae's and Leland remained close.

In 1929 Mame suffered serious head injuries in a car crash at Salt Lake City, Utah. She and her husband were on a sight-seeing trip at the time. [11]

From about 1934 onwards, Mame and her husband resided in Saint Paul, Minnesota, where he held a position as district manager at Tri-state T&T Company.[12] [13] [14]

Mary Jane Rae passed away in 1960, in Minnesota. She was laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery in Sioux City, Iowa. [15]
