OBITUARY. Death or Mrs. T. Whinnerah.—It is with profound regret, says our Hahndorf correspondent, that I have to chronicle the sudden death of Mrs. Thomas Whinnerah, of "The Cedars," near Hahndorf. The deceased lady had been ailing for several days, but the extreme gravity of her illness was never suspected even by her medical attendant. She was in particularly good spirits on Tuesday evening, but about 4 o'clock on Wednesday morning it was discovered with horror that she had peacefully passed away whilst sleeping. Residents of the township and neighborhood received the sad tidings with great despondency, and expressions of sorrow were heard upon all sides. Everyone realized that a cruel blow had been struck, for the deceased lady was a friend alike to rich and poor, and ever was her helping hand extended to those afflicted and in distress, and thankful to her for innumerable acts of benevolence are the sick and indigent. Charity and justice shone brightly in her nature. Such lives need no encomium—their acts are their commendation, their works their plaudits. We feel we have lost a dear friend whom we can ill spare. The cause of death was due to failure of the heart's action. Mrs. Whinnerah's remains were interred on Thursday in the North road cemetery. OBITUARY. Mr. Alfred Coles died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. James Redin, at Campbelltown, on Sunday evening. He was in his 93rd year, having been born before the date of the battle of Waterloo. He arrived in South Australia many years ago in the ship Navarino, and after remaining in Adelaide a short time was appointed headmaster of the Aldinga public school, which was at that time under the control of the district council, assisted by the State. Mr. Coles was a schoolmaster at Aldinga for a number of years, and was much respected there, being presented with an illuminated address on his departure. Returning to Adelaide, he joined the commercial staff of "The Advertiser," and remained a member of it for over 30 years, when he retired from active work. He was a capable musician. In London he played the violin in large orchestras, which performed before the late Queen Victoria, and he was a member of the old Philharmonic Society of Adelaide. He was born in Bristol, and at one time was the manager of a large business in London. His wife died nearly 13 years ago, and his surviving children are—Mrs. W. Walters, of Norwood; Mrs. George Smith, of North-East-road, Walkerville; and Mrs. James Redin, of Campbelltown. He also left a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
