Biography

Joseph Provost, dit Colette, son of Nicolas Provost, dit Colette & Ines Dubos, was born about 1726 at the Natchitoches Post in Louisiana, Nouvelle France. In 1745 he was counted with his parents in Pointe Coupee, Louisiana:

Nicolas PREVOT, sa femme; with 9 children, 0 slaves, 80 cattle, 12 horses or mules, and 15 hogs:
Nicolas Prevot, called Collet, 45
Jves (Yves/Ines) Dubos, his wife, 38
Piere Prevot, 21
Joseph Prevot, 19
Antoine Prevot, 3
Marie Francois Prevot, at the breast."[1]
He married Magdeleine Mayeux, daughter of Pierre Mayeux and deceased Marie Sellier, on 15 April 1749.[2] Ten years later he was a widower, and his father had died as well. He married Marie Jeanne Daublin, daughter of Valentin Daublin and Marguerite Descruirs, on 12 July 1759.[3] In 1771 they were counted in Attakapas, St. Martin, Louisiana,[4] and on 30 October 1774 they were counted there again.[5]
1776 Project
Joseph (Prevost) Provost served during the American Revolution.

He was a member of the Attakapas Militia in 1777, and was a patriot of the U.S. Revolutionary War.[6] That same month he was counted as a widower with six children and fourteen slaves in the census of 4 May 1777 at Attakapas, St. Martin, Louisiana.[7]

Inventory for the succession of probably his wife's estate (as the children came of age and moved on) was held on 2 November 1783 in St. Martinville.[8]

Joseph Prevost died and was buried at the churchyard of St. Martin de Tours Catholic Church on 20 November 1806; age given at death was 80 years.[9]

Removed parents--he was the son of a different Nicolas Prevost and Ines or Yves Dubos.

Colett Prevost-2 and Prevost-357 appear to represent the same person because: Duplicate. Parents of proposed merges need to be reconciled; if these do represent different Joseph Prevosts, then the death dates need to be sourced and reconciled so that they are not identical.
