In 1930, Richard and his parents were living with Verna's father on his farm in Tarrant County.[4] By 1935, they had moved to Laredo, Texas, on the Mexican border where Shad was working as a customs inspector.[5] Then, in January 1938, Richard's mother died of tuberculosis.[6] Richard was 8 years old, his sister Betty Ann was 7, and his brother Paul was 4. In about 1942, Shad married Anna Pearl Teague. They had one child.[7]
In 1947, Richard and his family were living in San Antonio, Texas, where Richard attended high school.[8]
Richard served in the US Army from 05 Jan 1951 to 09 Jan 1953.[9]
Richard married Janette Lavern Terrell on 27 Jan 1956.[10] They lived in San Antonio, Texas, until they moved to Friona, Texas, in 1965, where Richard started his private practice as an attorney.[11]
In about 1994, they moved to Waco, Texas[12] and then to Chandler, Texas in about 1998.[13]
