Biography

John was born about 1480.

John married Katherine although her last name at birth is unknown.

John and Katherine had five children, four sons and a daughter

  1. John born about 1502
  2. Alexander
  3. Bartholomew
  4. Edyerne
  5. Hugh

John died on 22 March 1537 and was buried a few days later in Burwash parish church. The date of death is given in his Inquisition Post Mortem which took place in Battle on 2 November 1543.[1]

His eldest son and heir John was aged 40 years and more at time of the inquest so was born about 1502.

John had lands in the Manor of Sokenersh in Brightling by deed 17 March 27 Hen. VIII enfeoffed trustees to his last Will, and made Will 18 March 1535—bequeathed lands to Alexander Colyn his son.

John wrote his will dated 18 March 1535. In his will he makes a number of significant bequests, including his family.[2]

  • He leaves sums of money for his "monthes and yeares mynd"
  • To wife Katherine two beds and such household stuff "as she shall think it best".
  • "To Katherne my wief two kyne and ten li in lawful money".
  • Son Hugh four score pounds of lawful money, inherited at age 26 years.
  • Son Hugh "to be ruled and guided by his brothers John, Alexander and Bartholomew"
  • Hugh also to receive his father's copyhold land lying and being in [ ]hurst. (most likely Lamberhurst but section of text missing)
  • Mentions daughter Edyerne wife of John Crotynden.
  • "Item I will that my said sons John Alexander and Bartholomew shall immediately after my decease have hold and occupie all such lands tenamanets and [furnances] in the parishes of Haylesham and Hurstmonceux"
  • three sons John Alexander and Bartholomew to "share brotherly together the use of the Iron forge with implements and tools".

The will was not proven until 18 November 1541.
