Angela Colletto is born around 1792 in Corleone, the daughter of Nunzio Colletto and his wife, Brigitta.
Her brother, Agostino, marries Gesualdo's sister, Francesca, in 1806.
She marries Gesualdo Birritella, son of Pietro Birritella and Anna Maria Porrazzo, on 4 February 1810.[1]
Gesualdo and Angela have at least seven children: Pietro (c. 1817), Anna Maria/Anna (c. 1820), Salvatore (c. 1823), Giuseppe (c. 1826), Vincenzo (c. 1827), Leoluca (1831), and Maria (c. 1835).
Leoluca is born 3 March 1831 and baptized on 2 April. His godparents are Gaetano Marsalisi and Giovanna, wife of Angelo Nieli.[2]
Maria is known from the record of her death in infancy on 17 January 1836.[4]
In the summer of 1837, Corleone was in the grip of the first epidemic of cholera to appear in western Europe. The disease, of unknown origin or cure, was soon blamed on so-called “annointers,” Bourbon spies who were poisoning the wells or foodstuffs. The rumors were employed by Republican revolutionaries, hoping to stir enmity against the king.
In July, a group of men, led by Giuseppe Catalinotto, took four men to the Gatto bridge and killed them, on suspicions of being “annointers.”[5] The same day, ‘’Maestro’’ Gesualdo dies.
‘’Don’’ Giovanni Colletto’s history does not mention him by name, but the Church’s record of Gesualdo’s death says that he is killed on 21 July. He is 48 years old (b. 1789).
A note in Latin appears on Gesualdo’s death record, and on those of three other men who are killed that day, however I’m unable to translate it. (Something like "secus pondis galli") [6]
Gesualdo’s wife is killed two days later. Colletto names Angela, Gesualdo’s widow, among the three women and two men who are killed by Antonino Ciravolo and his “executioner,” Biagio Listi.[5]
Angela dies at age 45 (b. 1792) on 23 July 1837.[7]
Anna Maria marries Filippo Governali on 17 September 1840 in Corleone.[8]
Maestro Pietro marries Anna Trumbatore on 4 June 1843.[9]
Giuseppe marries at least twice, first to Concetta Fogliani. He remarries to Lucia Triolo on 24 July 1864.[10]
Anna Maria Birrittella, a peasant, dies at the reported age of 56 on 22 August 1875 in her home on via Cappuccini in Corleone. She is survived by her husband, Filippo Governali, and is predeceased by her parents.[11]
