James Sharp Colley was baptised on 2 March 1787 at St.Mary Lambeth, son of John Barnabas Colley and Patty. He married Ann Chaney, daughter of Charles Chaney, on 2 October 1804 at St.Pancras, by banns both being of the parish. The witnesses were Thomas Sowerby, Mary Brown, Mary Sowerby and Ann Johnson. At the baptism of their first child in 1805 at St.Pancras, the witnesses were Patty Colley and Elizabeth Webb. In November 1822 at Paradise Row, St Pancras four daughters of James Sharp Colley and Anne daughter of Charles Chaney were baptised together. James was a witness at the marriage of Ann Colley to William Henry Pettit in 1831 and John Cole and Mary Colley in 1834. In 1766-7 Joseph Pocock and Daniel Harrison built Paradise Row, a terrace of 31 houses, near the north end of the Back Road; far from other building at Pentonville and built long before Barnsbury was begun, it remained isolated until c. 1800. They lived at Paradise Row in 1805, Britannia Street in 1807 and Paradise Row, St.Pancras from then until 1822 and by 1837 had moved to Green Lanes, pottery where they resided until their deaths. Granddaughters Mary Cole and Sarah Cole were staying there with James a potter aged 55 and his wife Ann on census night 1841, as was their daughter Charlotte. Ann died on 20 November 1848 aged 67 at The Kilns, Tottenham, [death certificate] and James Sharp Colley (wrongly written as Thomas S Colley) was born in Lambeth and was a widower and potter at Tile Kilns in 1851 aged 64 with a daughter Martha aged 36 born in Tottenham, an unmarried domestic, and a granddaughter Martha Hewton aged 3, next door to brother George,sister Elizabeth and on the other side William H and Anne Pettot and family and a few doors to son James B Colley and family.. James was a widower and potter, aged 74 living with his daughter Martha 46 at Green Lanes, tile kilns in 1861 census. James died on 19 May 1863 at the pottery, Green Lane, Tottenham. He was buried at Abney Park on 26 May 1863 aged 76.
His will, dated 16 September 1862 as James Sharp Colley of the pottery, Green Lanes, Tottenham, was proved by his brother George Colley of the Pottery, Green Lanes, Stoke Newington, and valued at £600. abstract: Being conscious of death do make my last will and testament, being possessed of four hundred pounds stock and ninety pounds in the Stoke Newington Savings Bank. Property to be equally divided between my children James Barnabas Colley, Mrs. Ann Pettitt, Mrs. Mary Cole, Martha Colley, Mrs. Elizabeth Hooton and Charlotte Colley. My watch to my son James Barnabas Colley. Witnesses were Daniel Dean and Francis Hazell of the Pottery Works, Green Lanes, Stoke Newington, Foreman to the Works.
