One of the first men from New Zealand to serve in WW1, Herbert was a Lance Corporal in the New Zealand Railway Engineers Samoan Advance Party 1914, [1]and a Sargent of 2nd Battalion Rifle Brigade. He was invalided home in January 1917. Herbert had sustained and injury to the head following a shell explosion after which he suffered fits. No longer able to serve Herbert carried out clerical work as staff and was promoted to Sargent Major in September 1918. He requested discharge the following year to pursue civilian work and was attested again as temporary staff to the NZMF in September 1939. [2] [3]
