One of the most peculiar of sudden deaths we have ever been called upon to chronicle was that of Mr. L. C. Collier, which occurred Friday afternoon at his home, eight miles northwest of the city.
Mr. Collier was a prominent farmer of Middle Creek precinct. In which he has livjed for two years, having lived in Lincoln for thirteen months previous to his residence in Middle Creek. He has a son, Mr. Stuart Collier, in Plummer, Perry & Co's office, and a daughter attending school in the city.
Mr. Collier was hauling hay from some stacks, about half a mile from the house. At four o'clock he came to the house, inquired the time, and started for the stacks with the team and wagon. About half past five a son, who was working in a field near by, saw the team come to the water trough with the unloaded wagon. He paid but little attention to it until nearly sun down when, noticing that the team still stood at the trough, he went to it to investigate. As he approaching the wagon he saw that his father was lying on the bottom of the rack and when he got to the wagon was horror stricken to find that life had evidently been extinct for some time. Death must have come almost instantaneously, as there were no signs of pain upon the features and the lines were grasped firmly in the right hand.
Coroner Shaw, accompanied by Dr. T. Butterfield, went out last night and viewed the remains. They concurred in the opinion that the death was caused by heart disease. No one had been seen near him during the last trip and there were no suspicions of foul play. An inquest was accordingly considered unnecessary.
Mr. Collier was a strong man, sixty-two years of age and had never been, to his family's knowledge, subject to heart disease. He was highly respected by a large circle of friends and was much devoted to his family. He leaves a wife, and a family of four daughters and three sons, all grown.
His funeral will occur at 10:30 this morning and the cortege will pass through the city about noon.
