• late fifteenth century Manners family left Constable, John Collingwood, in charge of Etal. He was responsible for the castle in 1513 when it was attacked by James IV ... Scot control did not last ... Thomas Howard, Earl of Surrey ... defeated the Scots at the Battle of Flodden (1513). Etal was retaken and ... returned to the Manners ... Crown purchased it in 1547 (Collingwood family remained as hereditary Constables).'^[4]
